Today, I painted this digital painting as we had our first December snowfall. This is the view from my room with a few changes and an exaggerated lighting. I had to do this fast because the sun was setting and I didn't want to loose the mood of the painting.

Artists in Bloom

Here's a poster I made for the Artists in Bloom event. During this event, artists paint a painting in two hours and it's open for public to come and see the painting process. It's followed by an auction of these paintings and all the money raised by the event goes to the Dawson College foundation, which supports students in need.

My design consists of two neutron stars colliding, creating a supernova. It's all painted digitally, and I left big brush strokes purposely because they seem like petals (relating to the blooming process).

Another acrylic painting I'm working on right now. It's an editorial piece for UPS (United Parcel Service) in which I had to use an animal delivering a parcel. I chose a snowy owl because it's fast, reliable, has a keen eye and can travel day or night. I've spent about 7 hours so far on this painting and I'm really enjoying working on it!

Urban Legend - Work in Progress

A double page spread editorial illustration I'm working on at the moment. It speaks of the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. I've exaggerated its size to create more of a dramatical effect. I have to add some fog, I'll probably dry brush to get this effect in order to enhance the spooky and mysterious mood. So far, I've used acrylics and watercolors for this piece. I got my inspiration by looking at some of Whistler's paintings.

Just a quick one hour portrait I did. I used Prismacolor pencil colors, applied a couple of layers of oil washes for the local color and used rubbing alcohol to get the highlights.

I made this poster for one of class projects. I used a couple of mediums to work on it for experimentation. I mainly used acrylics on masonite, did an oil wash and increased the highlights on Photoshop. I had an accident on the top of the bottle, but kind of controlled it and then purposely did the same 'accident' on the knife, spoon and the fork.

This is an acrylic painting I did for my Master Painting class. We had to choose an existing painting from a famous artist and change a little something in there, add a slogan if it fits well and repaint it. I would've liked to work some more on my painting, but had to give in on time. I should've made the mountains and the lower part of the sky a bit more desaturated due to the atmospheric perspective and I should've enhanced the detail in the clouds.

Montreal Comic Con

Last weekend, I went to the Montreal Comic Con with two of my friends. We had a table and sold our fanart to raise money for our art exhibition when we graduate.

The Comic Con was amazing! It was the first time I had a table so I got to see things from the other side. I met a bunch of good artists, bought a dozen books (comics, graphic novels) and took many photos. My only regret is that I couldn't meet Stan Lee!

What's been happening

I've been very busy lately working on my contract which explains why I haven't posted anything since a month. I'll try my best to update once a week from now on... Summer vacation is coming to an end as my final year of college will start in less than a week. Like every summer I would've liked to do more, but still I tick marked many things on my list of things to do. That been said I talked to a friend and he told me that it's good to take some time for yourself and not always be thinking about work and professional life. I got to do that too during this break so hopefully, I'll be more zen this upcoming school year.

Also, nowadays, I'm fasting because it's Ramadan and contrary to what many people think it's not just about refraining from eating and drinking, but it is also about learning to control yourself and your personal desires, etc. Mind over body basically. (Read the Charles Dickens quote below).

On a side note, I FINALLY bought a drawing table. I've never had one in my life so it's about time I got one! :)

Hello internet! Here's another short comic I wrote and illustrated a few months ago. I recently retouched it and since I never posted this ever before anywhere on the web (again), but I figured I should share it with you all! (Although this short comic has been published in a local collective comic book—Merure II by Montreal based artists.) I'm often shy about showing my narrative side because I feel there's always room for improvement and and frankly, I'm not that good at writing decent stories. For those of you who don't know I'm currently illustration my first full length graphic novel, but it's not written by me. I would eventually like to write my own stories. So I'm practicing more and more my story writing as often as I can. Enjoy the comic!

A good exercise to warm up and definitely a very good way to start if anyone wants to create new characters. Once you have a bunch of thumbnails, you can pick the most appealing ones and develop them furthermore.

What helps in the making of a great character design is a clear silhouette, a strong line of action and the posture of the character.

Flower painting

People often think that flowers and plants are easy to paint. They are wrong. Flowers/plants are one of the hardest things to paint, specially when using watercolors (Yes, that's how I spell watercolors)! You haven't really got a good grip of watercolors until you paint some flowers. I restarted this piece twice and I'm glad I did. Nobody should be afraid of restarting over again, because you learn so much from your own mistakes. I took photos of my work while I was working so I'll do a video montage later, when I get some free time.

What lies for us tomorrow

We are so preoccupied by our daily lives that we fail to see what really lies ahead for us. Little do we know that all that matters to us today can me gone tomorrow. For instance, by now you know that North Korea bombarded one or more South Korean island(s). The US might be preparing to send war ships towards that area and that means that war can be upon us. As Canada is an ally of the US, if they attack we would also be dragged into war along side our neighbours unfortunately. I seriously think that everybody should back off and try a more passive approach to communicate with the North Koreans. I hear people saying that we should nuke N.Korea but don't forget that they have nuclear weapons as well. Any side that launches the first nuclear attack is going to regret it because this will trigger WWIII. Now one might argue that the UN and the other governments of the world probably know this but this brings me to my second point: The NWO - The New World Order. It is said that this operation consists of reducing the world's almost 7 billion population to about 500 million people. Even those who would manage to survive would be affected by toxicity and radiation to a point that it could eventually end life as we know it. I wouldn't want to let the outcome of this world be decided by some political leaders who can't shake off their ego. I don't think the people elected them for that. If a nuclear war breaks out, there's no recovering from that. The after effects of a nuclear bomb can leave numerous diseases on the survivors and their offspring like mutation, heavy burns and more from the fallout. It's a scary thought, but we can work together to avoid that. Learn more and spread the word; don't be lost in your own world. There is so much I can say... Like how things like mass media are there to divert your attention and trap you in the vicious cycle of life. Don't be ignorant, use your intelligence and wake up from your sleep that is your every day life. Don't become a puppet of the society.

Raptors vs. Knicks game

So last Friday, October 22nd, I went to the Bell Centre for the first time! And it wasn't even to watch a hockey match! I went to watch a basket ball match (Toronto Raptors vs. New York Knicks) with my buddy Andrew. It was a great and a very close match but the Raptors won 108 - 103. I really had a lot of fun and the Bell Centre is so amazing that I only want to go again. I'll try to get some hockey tickets for the Habs match sometime soon.

This is an illustration I am currently working on in PS5. I started this piece this afternoon and I restarted it after getting pretty far. I wasn't satisfied with my first idea, so I made a completely different composition and I like this one much more! So this is about three hours of work. I gotta pick up some speed though. Have you ever closely looked at a photograph of yourself and happened to see a stranger in the background? I'm just wondering this because this happened to me more than once. It makes you wonder how many strangers have a photo or more of you... How many moments of other people's life have we been a part, even if it was for a few seconds? Just rifle through your Facebook albums (assuming you use this social networking site) and you'll see exactly what I mean. Think about it, may be you were or are a big part of someone's life, stranger or a distant friend, and not even know it!

Strange holiday feeling

It's been a month since I finished my freshman year of college. Though I'm happy that I passed all my classes, and my life in general is going okay, there's this feeling of emptiness. Every summer I set myself goals and think this time it would be special, that I would forget about sad things that happened in my life and I'd make a new beginning... But despite all those positive thoughts I start feeling lonely after a while. It's great that I don't have to wake up early in the morning to go to college and I don't have to come back home super late, but I start missing the people I use to see everyday. Though I like it or not I get attached to some people. I don't like getting attached, but it happens unwillingly.

Now that I have more time to myself, I usually get all philosophical and my mind sinks into deep thoughts. I think about the meaning of life, the purpose of my life, how far I've gotten and what I still have to do.

Btw, I've been working on my graphic novel and lately I've been putting a lot of hours into it. Hopefully, I'll get it done soon. That would be a great accomplishment for me! :)

Street Painting - June 2010

Last Friday (June 11th, 2010) between 10pm and 2am, 45 Montreal artists made 12 x 20 feet street paintings on Mont-Royal Avenue. It was once again a very nice experience. It was also the first time I did a street painting that big by myself. It came out pretty good and it was very encouraging getting nice comments by people from the begining till the end. The theme of this year was ''La Fête'' (party)! So what better than to represent Montreal by painting a skyline of downtown Montreal with fireworks in it's sky? That's how I chose to represent my city! Summer nights forever!

Reflection

I consider myself to be lucky that I've been offered a chance to live among the nicest people in the world. The citizens of Montreal and Laval are so nice, it's unbelievable. Like just last week, I was working on my graphic novel in a Tim Hortons and a couple saw my work. They gave me a compliment which made my day! A few days ago, I was on my way back home and I was drawing in the bus. This girl, while she was getting off the bus, gave me a very nice comment and again, it made my day! It's just heartwarming to see that I'm surrounded by good hearted people. Sure, there are some arrogant folks that I've met here, but there are some every where in the world.

A lot of my friends don't believe in a higher existence, but I'm thankful to Allah for giving me all he's given. I'm thankful for living in a peaceful society, and even though I'm thankful, I cannot say I'm fully satisfied because it would be ignorant of me if I just cared about myself and about those who are closest to me. It breaks my heart every time I read the newspaper or I read online news to acknowledge that everyday people are being killed elsewhere in the world for simply trying to live their life. As I write, in this very moment, innocent children are being tortured because of who they are or in what they believe in. Read the entire article and you'll get a better understanding. By the way, I'm not trying to disrespect some nation or a particular group of people, I'm just show how some of these people who call themselves soldiers or world leaders can be such lowlifes. Even in war, there is a limit to what you can or cannot do. This happens in so many parts of the world. Isn't it funny how these animals, no this is an insult to animals... how these monsters are seen as heroes by some, but they are the complete opposites in the greater picture. I just wish they would realize how harsh it would be if someone else were to tortured them the same way.

I'm disgusted by all the horrors some of these people are being forced to live through and frankly, I'm even more disgusted by all of the 'great' nations and the 'leaders' of the world who are letting this happen. You haven't really lived until you do something kind for someone who cannot repay you. Why can't people just say it's enough fighting and just forgive each other? Why can't there be peace in the world? Isn't that what everybody wants at the bottom of their hearts? The world should take example of our peaceful Canadian society. Those who laugh it off, I feel sad for you. I have no hatred in my heart thanks to the good people I see everyday, thanks to this great environment, thanks to this truly great nation without forgetting the amazing teachings of Islam.

I've completed my freshman year of college now and it felt like time just flew by so fast. I had certain objectives at the beginning of the year which I don't think I've accomplished. Though I've learned a few new things, there is this feeling of emptiness.

I've been working on Red Water (my upcoming graphic novel) full time for the past few days. I still need to accelerate my pace of work. I blame all the Facebook breaks I take during work time. Plus, I don't know what's wrong with me, but I get tired fast. I can't sleep for a long period of time at night but I would take a 2-3 hours nap in the middle of the day. I think I'm not made for an Earthly schedule. I should've been born on a planet which would have a 20 hour day at most. I believe I would perform better, hehe.

I finally got my business cards. Got a bunch of good comments on the matte finish!

This is my storyboard project. It's done for commercial illustration. The storyboards that I use to do before were for film and animation and those require arrows and annotations. They're not necessary in commercial storyboards. I had a great time working on this! Challenging but very fun! I want to thank Ashley for being such a good model!

Inspiration: Ace Combat 5, Ace Combat Zero. I got 95% on this project. The goal was to explore the grayscale, have a good composition and to contain the self portrait aspect obviously. This is the result of a weekend worth of work (with many long breaks, hehe). I'm kinda tired of doing self portraits by now... I'd like to explore other things.

I am doing this homework last minute. It's for my clay modeling class. I had to add an animalistic feature to my previously drawn self portrait. So this time I drew myself as leopard, but realized while drawing that ever since I watched Avatar (3 times at the movies), I've always wondered how I'd look like if I were a Na'vi. So not only I did my homework, I also got to complete a personnal challenge.

I've started my second semester at Dawson College! It has been great so far and I only hope for it to stay this way! I've been working on Red Water a lot lately. My college administration is giving me a hard time again. But whatever happens, I'll always be glad to know in my heart that whatever I've done in my life, I've done my very best to accomplish it. I may not have been as successful as I would've wanted in everything, but at least I've tried my best to achieve that.

This week, I've been working like crazy on Red Water. I'm finally getting about two pages done per day. I have to keep this pace to get the work done on time. I wish I can share all the work I do by posting it online, but I cannot because I risk having problems with the rights... I'll post this in the mean time. It's a work in progress. I called it F-96 just because it sounds cool. Hope I'll have time to get it done soon.

Art History - Final project

I know that there are flaws in my drawing such as the overgrown forearm and the lame right foot. I did it pretty late and I was feeling lazy to fix my mistakes. Sorry about that!

I'm completing my first semester in two weeks. Time really flies by! Hopefully, it'll be worth it!

P.S.: I haven't used color pencils since 2005. We had to use traditionnal media so I went back to using the media that I used most as a child. It was a fun project nontheless. I just finished this big project so I feel realllly relieved! Imma go get some rest now. Peace out!
